For a golf fundraiser of this magnitude, the event’s Chief Golf Officer, Nick Taylor, felt that live scoring and interactive leaderboard presentation would enhance the event immensely. Golf Genius Software’s tournament and scoring program, GolfEventGenius, was used forlive scoring and display leaderboards through online and TV displays throughout the day. Each foursome’s caddie downloaded the free Golf Genius mobile app and served as the live scorer for that group, using each foursome’s unique Golf Genius ID (GGID).
Golf Genius Software is honored to have been part of an event benefitting such a worthy cause, which proudly raised $800,000, making it the highest-grossing single-day golf event supporting the cancer cause across Canada.
The Golf Genius team caught up with Nick Taylor to learn more about the event and how Golf Genius Software performed.
What is the history behind the Golf to Conquer Cancer event?
The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation has a reputation for delivering some of the biggest and best fundraising events in the country. With golf as the largest participant sport in Canada, and aligning very well with a particular demographic, we chose to put a stake in the ground and add golf to our portfolio of marquis events.
Golf to Conquer Cancer was designed to be the “best in class” golf fundraiser on the calendar, aligned with corporate leaders, entrepreneurs and philanthropists who believe passionately in supporting the ongoing work of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre—one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.
Following a period of extensive research and review concerning premium golf tournaments last summer, the presenting sponsorship was sold to Harry Rosen Inc. in the late fall and Coppinwood Golf Club was selected as the inaugural host site in early December. A talented organizing committee set to work on promoting and selling the event in the middle of January – reaching a sold out state by early May of 2014.
How much money was raised?
We raised over $800,000.00 on the day, thanks to the thirty founding foursomes and over forty supportive sponsors and partners.
What was the format of play?
The tournament was a best ball format, with all foursomes (regardless of male and female golfers) competing head-to-head for both total score and all on-course contests from established men’s and ladies tees.
Why did you select Golf Genius Software and GolfEventGenius?
We met the folks from Golf Genius at the Toronto Golf Show and were impressed with the capabilities of the software right on the spot.
How did Golf Genius Software perform?
The Golf Genius platform offers such a robust set of features, admittedly more than we took advantage of as this first event was somewhat of a pilot and we wanted to explore live scoring within the event program. From that perspective, the live scoring worked very well, and added to some intrigue amongst the leading foursomes who knew what their competition was doing on the course.
What was the reaction from the golfers?
I believe the golfers enjoyed the fact that their foursome’s caddie was keeping live scores and could advise them of where they stood in terms of the leaderboard. They seemed to think the app and live scoring was very easy to use.
Will you use GolfEventGenius in the future?
As we are expanding our event to two courses on the same day next year—the leaderboard will be very important. There will be some unique elements to the scoring as the course layouts will obviously be different, but it can only add to the excitement of the competitive element on the day.
Jim and the team from Golf Genius Software were very easy to work with and they quickly set up our online website and app for use in our inaugural tournament. We were pleased with what we accomplished and feel it will continue to add value as we grow our event in years to come.
