As any golf league organizer knows, the job is tiring and thankless. From setting up weekly tournaments and pairings, to calculating stats and payouts down to the very last skin.
John Anderson, the league organizer for the Silk Group, and one of the first beta users of GolfLeagueGenius.com, knows how many hours go into managing a successful golf league.
We caught up with John to learn more about his league in Naples, Fla.
How long have you been playing in a golf league?
After retiring, I joined Wyndemere Country Club in Naples, Fla. One of the groups I joined at the club was the "Silk Group," which was open to players with handicaps of 18 or less. They play every Thursday and usually 36-48 players sign up. Because of my “supposed” computer skills, I quickly became the statistician for the group and then the pairings manager.
What is your favorite thing about playing in a golf league?
The camaraderie and meeting other golfers is great. But I'd be lying if I didn't say I also enjoy playing for prizes.
How did you first hear about GolfLeagueGenius.com?
I was looking for a web site or program that could handle the job of creating pairings for a group of 48 players every week...and do that without having the guys playing with the same people all the time. It was a big problem for me since we played in an ABCD format and as our season got longer, it took longer for me to come up with different pairings in my Excel spreadsheet. One day I Googled "golf pairings software" and came upon GolfTripGenius.com. I emailed the site and asked if they could handle 48 players. Mike Zisman replied and said “not currently,” and asked if I would be a beta customer for GolfLeagueGenius.com. The rest is history.
How has GolfLeagueGenius.com made your life easier?
I was spending hours creating pairings and compiling statistics for our group. I kept two Excel spreadsheets, one with who played with whom in previous events and the other with weekly statistics. Now all I have to do is push a button and most of the work is done for me.
What has the reaction been from the other golfers?
Our guys love checking out the statistics and comparing their stats to others.
What is your favorite feature of GolfLeagueGenius.com?
My favorite feature by far is the pairings. With 44-48 golfers, organizing pairings and making sure the guys weren't playing with the same people week to week was always my biggest problem.
What is your favorite tournament format that your golf league plays and why?
Total team net stableford. It keeps everyone in the game and keeps things positive. Not meeting quotas in a quota format creates negativity.
What advice do you have for other golfers looking to take their golf league to the next level with GolfLeagueGenius?
GolfLeagueGenius is worth every dollar. It makes league play more fun for everyone, especially the manager.
